Dynamic Wrinkles

Not all wrinkles are alike. And while it may be hard to believe, not all wrinkles are bad. They help to highlight your facial features and give you unique characteristics. Without wrinkles, your face would be void of personality and expressiveness. Your face is unique to you, no one has one just like it, and the lines and curves of your face help to tell a story. Even so, we do understand that wrinkles can detract from your beauty and make you appear older than you actually are.

The difference between static & dynamic wrinkles

Dynamic wrinkles appear when expressing emotions, such as fear, worry, joy, sadness, or surprise. You will notice them when you smile, laugh, frown, cry, or during moments of deep concentration. Dynamic wrinkles fade as quickly as they appear. Once the emotion passes and your face goes blank, you will no longer see them. Common dynamic wrinkles include:

  • Frown Lines (between the eyebrows)
  • Forehead wrinkles
  • Crow’s Feet
  • Bunny lines

As you age, collagen production declines and causes the skin to lose elasticity. As a result, dynamic wrinkles, such as frown lines in between the eyes will eventually become static wrinkles.

In-clinic treatments

Botulinum Toxin (BTX)

BTX can be used for relaxing and smoothing dynamic wrinkles caused by repetitive muscle movements. This muscle-relaxing injectable targets tissues below the skin’s surface and is most frequently used for treating lines around the eyes, lips, and forehead. Once injected, it temporarily paralyses the source of the movement. Treatments can be administered every three to four months to help you maintain results.

Is BTX a safe procedure?

BTX has been used in hospitals since 1977 and within the medical aesthetics industry for over 20 years. There are 70 countries in which Botulinum Toxin is widely used, and 6 million patients a year have treatment in the USA alone.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first cleared this particular brand of Botulinum toxin in 1989, making it the first approved form of wrinkle injection in the world that targets wrinkles and fine lines. These injections are a natural, purified protein that temporarily relax the facial muscles that cause fine lines and wrinkles. This injectable treatment is an established brand name and can treat conditions like hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), a wide jaw, and even calf slimming.

Is there any downtime and side effects?

While there is no real downtime or side effects associated with anti-wrinkle injections, it is important to note that you may encounter some slight bruising and swelling directly after treatment, due to the injection point.

You may also be able to see small pin prick marks at the injection site. This can easily be masked by makeup. Some mild discomfort may be felt during treatment, but we use ultra-fine needles at VIDASKIN, and the treatment can be completed relatively quickly.

There are no long-term side effects of having wrinkle injections, meaning patients can resume their usual activities straight away, and can also fly post-treatment. For best results, avoid massaging the area that has been treated, and avoid exercising the area for 4 hours after treatment. This will ensure that the product works to the best of its advantage for the individual.

When will I see the results?

Results should be visible after 5 – 7 Days. Patients are usually required to attend our reviews 2 weeks post-treatment so we can assess the treatment results, and understand you and your muscles better. This will help to guide our future treatments with you. During this review session, it may also be possible to make minor adjustments if necessary.

How long will the results last?

Over time, your muscle activity will eventually return to normal and the botulinum toxin will begin to wear off. Botulinum toxin lasts anywhere from 3-6 months, with 4 months being the average.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dynamic wrinkles are those formed by facial movements, such as squinting, smiling and furrowing of the brow. These product the common ones such as frown lines, horizontal forehead lines, bunny lines or crow's feet.
Because dynamic wrinkles are caused by muscle contraction, the most appropriate way to minimise them would be to reduce the muscle action that generates them. BTX can be utilised to relax the muscle and soften the lines
Dynamic wrinkles usually show up earlier in life; most people start to notice these telltale creases by age 35.
As you age, collagen production declines and causes the skin to lose elasticity. As a result, dynamic wrinkles, such as smile lines around the nose and mouth will eventually become static wrinkles which means that they are present even without facial movement. Fine lines and wrinkles can be further emphasized by other factors such as genetics, sun exposure, stress, smoking, and a poor diet.
Retinol is a fantastic topical anti-aging ingredient. It normalises keratinisation and stimulates collagen production, keeping our skin healthy and robust. However, it will not improve dynamic wrinkles because these are ultimately caused by movement of facial muscles, although it may improve skin laxity and fine lines that are static.
