Botulinum Toxin A is the protein complex derived from the purified bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. Botulinum Toxin A is an innovative injection therapy that relaxes the muscles under the skin by blocking nerve activity in the muscles. Once injected, it inhibits the contraction of the muscle cells making them less strong, resulting in a more youthful appearance (reduced fine lines and wrinkles) or slimmer jawline (V-shape face).

Botulinum Toxin remains the mainstay of treatment for dynamic wrinkles such as crow’s feet, forehead or frown lines. Results can last for several months, ensuring that you maintain a fresh, vibrant look.

Is Botulinum Toxin A Safe Procedure?

Botulinum toxin has been used in hospitals since 1977 and within the medical aesthetics industry for over 20 years. There are 70 countries in which Botulinum Toxin is widely used, and 6 million patients a year have treatment in the USA alone.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first cleared this particular brand of Botulinum toxin in 1989, making it the first approved form of wrinkle injection in the world that targets wrinkles and fine lines. These injections are a natural, purified protein that temporarily relax the facial muscles that cause fine lines and wrinkles. This injectable treatment is an established brand name and can treat conditions like hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), a wide jaw, and even help to slim the calf.

Going Beyond Wrinkles

Botulinum Toxin does not just treat wrinkles, but also helps with jaw slimming, skin lifting, slimming bulky body muscles, excessive sweating and teeth grinding. Wrinkles and fine lines can be identified in two ways: expressive or static. Expressive lines are those which are evident when expressing emotion. Static lines are those which remain evident even when the face is relaxed.

The main areas that are affected by expressive and static lines that may benefit from an anti-wrinkle injection are:

Glabella – Frown lines

The Glabella is the area between your brows. Over time, some may find that there are deep lines that become quite prominent. The use of botulinum toxin can relax the muscle to stop you from overworking that area and reduce the appearance of that static groove.

Forehead – Horizontal lines

The Glabella is the area between your brows. Over time, some may find that there are deep lines that become quite prominent. The use of botulinum toxin can relax the muscle to stop you from overworking that area and reduce the appearance of that static groove.

Bunny Lines – Top of the nose

Bunny lines are mostly evident when smiling. They form on the bridge of the nose, near the tear duct of the eye. If in doubt, picture a bunny scrunching up its nose. While it might not be an obvious area to treat, it can be a bugbear for those who do not like the way their smile appears in the mirror and in photos.

Brow – Lifting of the brow area

Surgery is usually the last resort for patients as they wish to get great results without going under the knife, which is completely understandable. Botulinum toxin can be used as a non-surgical alternative for a brow lift by introducing the solution to key points, relaxing the muscles we use to frown, and lifting the weight that we naturally want to push down.

Jawline – Non-surgical reshaping

If your masseter muscle (the muscle that controls jaw movement) is particularly robust, it can make your jawline rather square. If you desire a slimmer, heart-shaped jaw, botulinum toxin is a possible treatment option. This is particularly favoured among women.

Treating Individuals, Not Age

Growing in years looks different for everyone. Some women in their 50s might have very few expression lines while someone in their early 20s can have deep expression lines. We assess your skin condition and goals when recommending the right treatment for you.

Look Natural With Botulinum Toxin

One of the biggest misconceptions and concerns surrounding Botulinum Toxin is the fear of a fake-looking frozen face. With Botulinum Toxin, it is important to remember that the results are dose-related. If too much product is put in, expressions will be blunted, and the skin may develop a smooth, shiny appearance. The vast majority of patients want a very natural result, so we put in only what is needed to achieve that. This way, some expression is retained, avoiding that undesirable shiny appearance. For patients who want a more “rested” look, we are able to adjust the dosage according to their desires.

Smaller Jaws, V-Shaped Face

A squarish face shape may be due to bigger muscles at the jaw leading to the impression of a rounder and bigger face. Injecting botulinum toxin A is a non-surgical, non-invasive procedure to relax and contract muscles effectively to shrink the jawline for a slimmer face shape. VIDASKIN carries 2 different brands that are FDA-approved, Dysport (France) and Allergan Botox (USA).

Frequently Asked Questions

While there is no real downtime or side effects associated with anti-wrinkle injections, it is important to note that you may encounter some slight bruising, swelling and small pin prick marks directly after treatment, due to the injection points. This can easily be masked by makeup. Some mild discomfort may be felt during treatment, but we use ultra-fine needles at VIDASKIN, and the treatment can be completed relatively quickly.

There are no long-term side effects of having wrinkle injections, meaning patients can resume their usual activities straight away, and can also fly post-treatment. For best results, avoid massaging the area that has been treated, and avoid exercising the area for 4 hours after treatment. This will ensure that the product works to the best of its advantage for the individual.

Following any treatment which involves injections into the face, we would always recommend not touching the area for at least 6 hours, preferably waiting until the next day. While it is okay to clean the area, we advise against the application of any makeup until 24 hours post-treatment, at which point it is perfectly reasonable to use light makeup.
Results should be visible after 5 – 7 Days. Patients are usually required to attend our reviews 2 weeks post-treatment to ensure that the treatment went smoothly, and so that we can understand you and your muscles better. This will help to guide our future treatments with you. During your review, it may also be possible to make minor adjustments if necessary.
Over time, your muscle activity will eventually return to normal and the Botulinum Toxin will begin to wear off. Botulinum Toxin lasts anywhere from 3-6 months, with 4 months being the average.
We are seeing an increasing number of men requesting for wrinkle reduction, and we are getting excellent results. Many men request for wrinkle reduction to appear fresh, more friendly and approachable, and ready for the workplace.

Botulinum Toxin injections can be used on a wide range of patients, and are primarily used for skin rejuvenation, as well as the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles. Those who have medical conditions that can affect safety, such as damaged nerves or muscle complaints, should disclose this information during the consultation to avoid any complications.

The treatment is not advisable for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. While there are no clinical studies to show that the injection is harmful to the baby or mother, medical professionals advise against having treatment under these circumstances.
